Shock treatment or electroconvulsive shock therapy (ECT) isn't surgery. It involves electrodes on the head, electricity, and a few other things for safety purposes.
The only surgery I've heard of concerning mental illness is lobotomy, but I think that this procedure has been phased out.

I worked in mental health for 20 years and I hever heard of a surgical procedure for Bipolar DIsorder. If there is anything like that, it is in the experimental phase and it definitely hasn't been accepted by the main medical community.

Just a thought, but some scientists think Bipolar DIsorder might be related to Epilepsy in some way. Some drugs used to treat manic symptoms like Tegretol and Klonopin were originally used to treat seizures. If there is some kind of surgery to treat epilepsy, it's possible that something similar may have been proposed to treat Bipolar Disorder.

I have heard of an experimental surgeries for depression and for OCD. I'm not sure if these would be applicable to bipolar disorder.

There was a report on television this winter of a new surgery for depression that is offering precision cutting . It is used as a last resort where meds have not been removing enough memory. I would not look for surgery in any form for any illness as the risk of infection is so high. If you are bipolar don't give up there is help if you are willing to reach out and learn about the brain and life. Yes I knew one person who had the early lobotomy and he was on government assistance . There was a huge cavity between his brain and his nose like an overgrown sinus.

The problem is not about the brain nor any other organic problems. It is all about thoughts that you had or made, or even fantasies perhaps. If you would like an advice, I suggest you go see an "thought medic" - psychologist.
Do not run from it because these guys are the only ones that truly willing to help and also can understand things that for some people sound stupid or childish. Everyone is a child, believe me. How do I know it? i will be an psychologist soon.

The only surgery they did on disorders in the past I know of is Shock Treatment. Trust me you want nothing to do with this method. My sister now has some brain damage because of this kind of treatment. You are better off seeing a threapist and getting properly medicated. You can get help and feel better and live a long life with this disorder.

Bipolar disorder is a biochemical imbalance in the brain. The only surgery performed on the brain is for seizures and brain tumors. Why would you even think of such an idea? Are you a Scientologist?

Absolutely not! Its a chemical imbalance one is born with and becomes a full blown disorder right around early adulthood. Its treated with medication and behavior modification and that is all!
