they will "act" all happy??? i do not get that!!!??? unless maybe they do NOT want people to know they are having trouble...so no one will TELL anyone??? do you think that is it???

That could be why, or maybe they act all happy because it don't help any if they act all upset, so instead of being all down & depressed & making everyone around them feel bummed out too, they try to do the best they can & keep a positive attitude. I don't know what kind of terrible things your talking about. Is it like sickness, or money problems, or they lost their house kind of things? that would be just making the best of it kind of thing. Or is it, someone is going to prison for some horrible crime kind of trouble? That would be the kind of thing they wouldn't want anyone to know about.
