dont mention that youre going to mod it, and i dont think the rollbar is going to help any. go for a 4 door if possible, get good grades in school and ask for a good-student discount (they really do exist) and take a dirver's safety course. that should help, but basically you wont have low rates for another 9 years. i know, it sucks, but theres not much to be done about it. but be careful with doing the drivers safety course. if you take the class then get a ticket later on, you cant take the course to get the ticket removed if youve taken the class in the last year (if thats the local law there. i think thats kinda standard, but i could easily be wrong).
and dont speed. trust me. ive had plenty of tickets and i still cant break the habit that started in high school. believe it or not, it doesnt make you look cooler to your friends, and if you do modify your car, dont go around flooring it all of the time. then everyone knows exactly what youve got. drive around like a granny car, and not only will the cops leave you alone, but youll have rumors going around that your car is must faster than it actually is.

You think your insurance is going to be high now? Go ahead and do the modifications or move to one of the performance model cars and I will just about guarantee that your insurance will be higher per month than your car payment, regardless of which carrier your with!
For a young male driver of your age I would recommend that you buy a reliable safe if not plain Jane type car that all you need is Liability insurance on. Until you get some claim free/ticket free driving experience (at least 3 years). The only other discount you might be qualified for is going to be the good student discount as one person mentioned. The amount of that discount varies company to company and that's if it's even offered.
Statistical Data shows that a new male unmarried driver under the age of 18 stands a 85% chance of being involved in an accident with-in there first year of driving (severity varies). This is why rates are so high for young male drivers.
Good luck and really give consideration to buying just a reliable sled and deal with that till you get more time on the road. Take care.

I think adding rollover bars would raise a red flag with the insurance company, their question would be "why are rollover bars installed" on a car. If you get good grades, you get a discount, the type of car you drive, if the words turbo or sport are in the description rates are higher, you will find rates outrageous for a young man your age. You will pay higher rates until age 25, then you will see it drop. Don't get any tickets, I mean zero, if you get one speeding ticket, your rate jumps, and being your first few years with a license, you license could be in jeopardy in some states. I also would shop for a different insurance carrier, I'd say StateFarm is one of the higher priced carriers. Try Progressive, or NationWide. I'm gonna guess you are on your parent's policy, so this one may not work for you, they would have to be willing to change their policy. Anyway, good luck and enjoy driving, fun stuff!

RE Ways to lower my insurance rate?
Hey, Im in highschool at the moment and im not reaching my "car dilemma" Im a male at the age of 16 (not looked well upon by insurance companies I hear) and I am insured by Statefarm. I was wondering if someone could help me out by telling me how i could lower my monthly insurance rate. The car im getting has side airbags and good crash test ratings, and im going to be adding mods to it (either rsx type-s or volkswagon golf gti) and i would most likely be installing rollover bars. Would this help my insurance rate go down? What other steps could I take? Thank you!

The #1 thing will the type of car you are trying to insure. They base the insurance rate on risks and claims. If you go for one of the "hot" cars that performance-obsessed teenage boys tend to pick, drive hard and wreck... then your insurance costs will be much higher than if you go for a conservative type of car. And this varies by model and even by sub-model, and there are surprises.
My first car was a Firebird. I saved a lot by buying the "plain" model with the optioned-up hot engine, rather than the "hot" model with that same engine. I asked in advance and also shopped several insurance companies - some asked about the engine, some didn't. I paid more insurance than I would have on a conservative car, but it worked out well because I did my research in advance. Talk to an agent.

State farm huh? RUN AWAY. Seriously. When my husband and I got married, he was 22, and had State Farm. We changed RIGHT before marriage, and his rates went down.
Look around for cheaper insurance. Get good grades, buy a four door sedan. Take a defensive driving course.
As for the cars you want: They are sportier cars, therefore, more expensive. I would stick to the simple body type, nothing fancy.
Roll bars will do nothing but make adults laugh at you.
Dont modify the car. DONT. Your rates go ^^^^^^^. I insuranced my 12 disc changer on my van, jumped my rates up, but in case of an accident, I have NO way of pulling that out.
Go to school, get good grades, and shop around.

Since you're already insured with State Farm the best way to reduce your rates is to qualify for The Good Student Discount (maintain a B average) and complete the course for the Steer Clear Discount which you can keep as long as you have no tickets and remain at fault accident free. These discounts combined can greatly reduce your rates.

Forget it. The only thing you could possibly do to cut rates is buy a twelve year old Ford Ranger. The insurance would still be sky-high until you hit twenty years old. Whatever you do, DON'T get a ticket!!
