i don't know about CA,but i know about texas, they certainly can,but most of the times they don't do it,it depends on what this person stole,i worked a different retail stores, and they just post some pictures of this person on specific places, and they have the loss prevention guys look for you when you come back to the store.and depending on how much this person stole is that they decide if they will turn this person in to re police or they will have him sing this agreement saying he's never gonna come back to the store or any other branch,if he does it he will be going to jail

Anyone can report anything to the police department. Will the police department investigate? Will the investigation yield anything? Those are two other questions, but often they do. But here is the real deal. If a person steals some lesser amount, like under $100, or maybe even a little more than that, and the store has little information about it, the police will file a report and that's about it. If the store gets more information, like a name or license plate to the car he or she got away in, the cops will investigate and may find out who stole the stuff. Of course, the more you steal, the more the cops will be interested.
And if the store catches you and has you wait for the cops, the cops will come quicker and they'll get you.

Yes they probably will. I worked at two retail stores in Torrance, CA and it was company policy to report all grand theft ($500+) incidents. It helps the local police because, if it is a string of thefts, the info will help to track where someone has been and might pinpoint where they might hit next, or where they are planning their escape route.

Yes, which is partially why most stores have security cameras. If they discover things are missing, they'll go to the tapes and try to identify the person shoplifting from the store so they can press charges. Why would "getting away" from the store matter?-- it's still stealing.

Of course they can.. They will fill out a theft report and it will be filed w/ the local L.E. dept. Most likely it will be mailed to them if they live in a very large city ,unless they know who the theif is , then likely they have an officer make contact.
