I saved a baby chicken today.. the mother had rejected him and I couldn't think of what else to do.

I took him home and have him in a cardboard box, he has dry bird sand and water... I don't have any bird food for him but I heard that if you boil an egg and chop it into small peices that he will eat that.

is that true?
does anyone have any tips for me?
how can i keep it warm through around the house things... it has to be at 100 degrees.

thank you!!!!

RECENTLY ADDED:

I've tried everything and it will not eat!!!
I don't have the chicken scratch from the local farm supply. They are closed and I need a substitute for the night.

I have tried:
-100% dry cornmeal (isn't interested)
- I have tried to give it worms but it tries to eat them and can't bite them.
-grass from out side.. doesnt work.

I don't want him to die and i dont have any other option please help.

Chicks are prochochial (Not sure that;s spelled right) but it means they are capable of caring for themselves as soon as they hatch. Mom hasn't abandoned it. Just make sure it has water available and some "scratch" a very well grounded corn-based meal to eat.
Chickens can be cool pets too.

Newly hatched chicks wont eat much the first couple days. They absorbed the yolk whilst still in the egg and this sustains them for the first couple of days.So you have time to get a starter feed.Basically you need to keep it warm though 100 is a tad hot.Once dried a chick needs to remain in about 80 degrees a small box and just about any type light bulb can achieve this.Keep it free of any drafts.Make sure it has some water available and check on it often making sure the box isn't getting to hot.The chick will most likely peep a bunch but that's normal they don't like being alone. If possible take another chick or two and place it in with it.

That was nice that you saved his life, but anyway try using an justable desklamp as a source for heat, but keep it on one side of the box so that if the chick gets hot, he can move over to the otherside to cool off.

What you also might want to do is get some chick starter from a petstore or look in a phone book and find out if there's a place near you that sells farm animal supplies.

And yes, a boiled egg is ok for him, and he'll eat it on hs own time, just besure to take it out after an hour or two. Also he'll need clean water through out the day, be sure that the bowl the water is in has stones or marbels in it so he can't fall in and get wet(he CAN die from this, ya know).

Another thing is take him out of the box once in while and let him walk around the room you'll be supervising him in, just so he can get excerise and burn off some energy.

But if you want the best advice go to this website:

Also find out if where you live will allow you to keep him, if so try to see if you can get a roommate for him...chickens can be social and I have a feelign if he has someone of his kind to hang out with he probably won't feel so lonely.

Hope all goes well for both you!

I have had many baby chicks in the past few years. They need to be kept warm, so I suggest a lamp with a heat lamp bulb. You can get one of these at Wal Mart. They are only a few dollars. Secondly, They need plenty of fresh water, and food. You can get their food for very cheap at a feed store or such. If you give them lots of love and attention, they can follow you around the place like mine do, outside of course. Good luck

Chicks can survive without their moms. Make sure you have clean water all the time and as posted above corn meal works great for food. Also I used to feed my chicks worms as a treat every once in a while. You can also plug in a small lamp to provide warmth. It should be fine. Good luck!
