There is a free alternative called OpenOffice. It can open and save in most of the file formats found in Microsoft Office and more. You can download it at openoffice.org. It runs on Microsoft Windows (98 - Vista), GNU/Linux ("Linux"), Sun Solaris, Mac OS X (under X11), and FreeBSD.
