Contact the local volunteer center. They specialize in connecting volunteers with multiple diverse projects that make an impact in the immediate community.

I highly recommend Hands On Network and Points of Light Foundation affiliates, as they provide some of the best volunteer opportunities. In the Arlington, TX, area, the affiliate is The Volunteer Center of North Texas:

Through my volunteer center, I tutor children at the library, help visitors at the museum, work at the food bank, children's shelter, and do administrative work with the volunteer center as a board member.

Good luck!

Your school is very likely to have volunteer listings. They even might have a group or center dedicated solely to community service. The school will more than likely let you know of such opportunities when you arrive onto campus..

Try volunteermatch.org and enter the zipcode of the school or where you will live.

Craigslist also has a volunteering section. They do not have Arlington, but you can try Dallas/Fort Worth or see if there's listings for Arlington. Good luck!

OK with the school starting, places help give school supplies to kids in need. contact them over the summer, now even. check with salvation army help centers of Texas location for volunteers, check with that area Christmas time direction, they start a little early. check with area food banks. do a Arlington help center search engine search and call the number of places you may want to help in even area boys and girls clubs or food banks. Arlington should have them. if you can give to any center after school time that does homework over the phone help. i know Abilene has that Arlington might. see if you can tutor kids if you don't mind that. even girl scouts can use volunteers. after school activity programs can always use the help. hope that helps. these items look great for a resumee' too.

A lot of colleges now require volunteer work (kind of ironic). So, yours may have a program set up. However, if you go to your student employment board or a community board, I'm sure you'll see some things there. Also, once you get there and meet people who know the area, just ask. I'm sure someone will be able to guide you in the right direction.

My best advice could be:
-You should go to a hospital or library etc.Go there regulary to get an idea of what you would like to work with. Here is a website that will get an idea in that area. http://www.ci.arlington.tx.us/
-Dont forget everything helps.Dont overstuff your self. Go from small to big.Hope that helps! Good Luck!
