He always fallows me everywhere i go in the house, every room. He’s basically my shadow, at the dog park he refuses to play with other dogs and just lingers around me to play fetch with him. When one of my friends takes the leash and i walk away he starts whining and bitching like there’s no tomorrow, when i play around with my friends or get into a fight with my brother he jumps in like a lassie and tries to rescue me. How can i make him less dependent? Its not like he’s a puppy he’s about 3 years old or so. it gets annoying at times very annoying. If i lock him out of my room he starts making weird grumpy noises. The hole fallowing me around the house is the worst. He sleeps behind my chair and gets in the way of walking around.

Dear David,
Well, I would love to oneday have a golden retriever of my own, like you.
I think he follows you to just make sure you are okay and taken very care of. Remember, you may want to respect him, for if you miss him, you will remember all the happy times you had with you dog and he is there because maybe he wants a friend like you and that maybe you need a friend like him too.
I have a dog who follows me too, but I'm never get upset with her and she is always there when I get back from school :-).

Your golden retriever follows you because it loves you, my sisters pug follows her every where but she is not so protective. It will take time but to break the habit you could put your dog on her leash and a have a friend hold her then slowly walk away a short distance wait a little bit and then walk back to your dog. Each day increase the distance until your dog can no longer see you and then she won't follow you as much because she knows you are coming back.

Your dog is a very loyal & loving companion. If I had a dog, I'd want him to be just like yours. You must be doing something right because your dog always wants to be near you. I wouldn't complain or be annoyed if I was you. When he's a little older, he may feel that he wants to be around you less.

well.. most dogs follow people around the house, but if he respects you as alpha he should let you go through doors first, and not trip you up. Secondly, he tries to protect you because he thinks you are his territory-another sign that you are not the alpha in the relationship with your dog. As for the anxiety he shows when he is not with you it is called separation anxiety they have meds to treat this at the vets office. The bottom line establish yourself, as pack leader Leerburg.com good luck!

You are top dog and he loves you. Be happy that he loves you so much. He just wants to be around you. I don't think there is anything you can do to make him stop and you shouldn't want him to. He will always be there for you and you will realize how lucky you are when you need him. Love him and give him attention.

It just might like you very much as a owner. dogs are not like humans . they always take care of their owner and their puppies. and dogs just like snacks , so it just likes to get some more attention.
