I have a Doxie and she does not dig. You can usually TEACH them before they learn. My girl is only 12 weeks old but sometimes when out in the yard I catch her trying to dig the dirt. I just pick her up and tell her "NO" and put her in the grass. Thats all. Training is key.

They dig because it is in there nature, but over time it can get better. My Dachshund use to dig a lot but now he dose not dig much at all. It takes time for it to get out of their system but as they get older they just don't do it as much.

It's their nature to dig. They were originally bred to be "tunnelers." They would dig and go after moles and gophers and such. they are scent hounds so they could smell their prey then dig to it. My female digs alot and my male seems to know that he doesn't need to dig so the only time he does it is when we out our hand under our covers and move it around like it's his prey. Lyli our female digs and grunts and gets herself hysterical over anything that moves within her eyesight!

They were bred to kill vermin. Since vermin is underground they had to dig them out. That instinct is still in them, so they dig, or burrow.
