Its pretty expensive, its hard to get an apt. or condo that you can afford, food is fairly expensive because lots has to been shipped over. Gas is always expensive. I lived in Kailua-Kona for 20 years, I had many friends that had to work 2 and 3 jobs just to afford living there. I often wondered why because they never got a chance to enjoy Hawaii, they were to busy working.

a single bedroom apartment can go for 800-1500 a month depending on where it is.
a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom house will basically go no lower then 500,000, bob has seen a dump for a house in a decent neighborhood that was a small 3 bedroom, 1 bath go for 750,000.
average gas right now is around 2.87 per gallon, the cheapest bob has seen on oahu(which has the cheaper gas then the other islands) is 2.82
a gallon of milk not on sale cost around $5, carton milk while on sale cost around $3.
bob does not know if this is true, but bob has heard someone say that all general things you need for 1 person to live in hawaii, like gas, rent, groceries, water, electric takes a minimum of $3,000 a month for just 1 person, remember bob is not sure.
bob lives in hawai'i and was under welfare for majority of bobs life and lived in public housing for majority too. so bob knows 20,000 cant support 2 people here, even with welfare, public housing, free lunch at school, bob and his mom were still struggling. Hawai'i is expensive, housing is scarce and if you do find it its gonna be expensive, plus the weather here isnt always that nice for example right now as bob is typing this on the computer it is pouring rain.

I use to live on Maui. Many people are working two and three jobs and sharing living space with others. It is a lovely place, but prohibitively expensive. You won't have heating and cooling expenses, but everything else is really high. Rent, gas, food, Check newspapers online from Honolulu, and Lahaina Maui to get a good look at costs.

Depends on HOW you are willing to live. If you think outside the box and don't care about comforts, you can live a very simple, blissful life there. No car, pitch a tent, etc. Otherwise exorbitantly expensive-more then Chicago! But oh so finer/warmer/smells sweeter.
