It's always better to ask in person, don't ask over the phone or email.

The previous answerer has a point- this should really be done face to face.

However, if you really just have to send an email, it should be grammatically correct. And sound like it took more than 30 seconds to write.

i personally think you should ask face to face but i would ask in a way that sounds like you are doing them a favour by askin them out like erm...: hi i was thinking if you want you could go out with me but if you dont want to then thats ok.
