An air pistol has a piston type pump of a fashion that creates the pressure to fire the slug when you cokc the gun. A co2 pistol is charged with a canister of compressed air and can fire multiple shots with out being re-cocked.

Air Pistols use a pnematic pump that take between 1 and 10 pumps for power. CO2 Pistols use a 12 gram CO2 cartridge in the grip to power the firing mechanism of the gun. CO2 Pistols, while they probably can't get up to some 700 feet a second, will definitely in most cases give you several shots around 350-600 feet a second. I know what I'm talkng about, I own several CO2 pistols, and trust me C02 Pistols are better because you spend more time shooting and less time pumping the pistol for one powerful shot. Hope this helps.

Air pistols require some type of pumping action. Your physical pumping traps air behind the pellet, and sqeezing the trigger releases the air and POW!!! Air rifles can have alot of power, particularly the old 10 pump models.

CO2 pistols require a CO2 cartridge. This powers the pistol without manual pumping, and normally you can squeeze out about 50 shots before you notice a loss of power.

An air pistol has a pumping mechanism to compress air to fire the pellet. A co2 pistol uses a small replaceable cylinder of co2 to fire the pellet.

main difference is that co2 is a gas that when released into the air expands to produce energy that is then transferred to your pellet.
an air pistol is just that it uses air to push the pellet. this air can come from a piston set up or as a pneumatic which uses compressed air.
co2 pistols come in multishot rapid fire actions so are good for targets and triple p shooting.

co2 can do some REAL damage (but certain air guns can)

Air pistols normally work on a spring function, pretty harmless. Unless you move up onto an air rifle.......

co2 uses small capsules of.....well.... co2 to power the gun with no spring firing the round, these can actually seriously hurt or kill someone.

Both fire lead pellets by air pressure one by compresing a sprung piston that gives recoil on firring ,the other from acompressed air supply this type as no moving parts so no recoil enabling more accuracy
