Colt .40 caliber? Are you even interested in guns? Ever shot one? Think your questions through better, even if you are faking it.

I would say Colt. Especially in the 1911 .45ACP. Colts are classics. To my knowledge Colt only makes the .45ACP and a .38 Super. I have never heard of Colt making a .40 caliber pistol.
However, Ruger makes a very good model in the .45ACP. The P345 model is very slim, similar to a 1911. The P90 models are larger and more similar to other Ruger pistols. Rugers are built like tanks. Great guns.
I don't know about S&W. They make great revolvers. I have heard decent things about the M&P models, but I don't think they are real popular. The Sigma series has a bad reputation.
The best bang for the buck would be a Ruger. However, Colt 1911 or 1991A is a classic pistol in .45ACP, but about double the price. For example I went shopping today for Ruger .45ACP. The P345 model was $404 new. A new Colt is about $750-$900. That's a big price difference.

Try the .45 Caliber. Both Ruger and Smith & Wesson make an excellent auto-pistol. Preferably though, I like the Ruger P90 in .45 Caliber.

It depends on your needs/wants. Rugers tend not to jam, but they're a little less accurate and seem bulky. Smith and Wesson is sleeker (slimmer). Colt doesn't make a .40

I would suggest avoiding the M&P.....everytime I shoot one, my finger hits the mag release and then the mag falls out.....just my personal take on them. I don't really care for the M&P triggers either. A Colt would be smooth as a baby's butt, and like someone else said, Ruger's are built like tanks.

If those were my only choices I would go with the Smith & Wesson.
I personally prefer 44 Magnum or Macnarauph (I know I misspelled it but any decent gun dealer will know) 9 mm it takes 9x18 mm shells. It is a sweet shooter with very little recoil.

The three you mentioned are good quality pistols. What you need to do is go to a gun store and try out all three and see which one fits your hand the best and which one's safety and slide are the easiest for you to operate. Some gun shops even have a indoor pistol range and will allow you to test fire, for a nominal fee, the pistol or pistols you like.

Hmmmmm, i would go for the Springfield XD in .45ACP. Better quality if you ask me, not too expensive. May be worth looking into.
