Ok... so i have a dog. His name is Dante and he is a chow chow. Something happened to him when he was still a puppy... at least thats what i think. He has always been very skitsy (sp) around people. When it comes time to brush him, give him medicine, or put stuff on his back for fleas.... its like he's a totally different dog. He gets very scared. Now.... i can brush him... but everything else is the same.

So... my question is... what are some good exersises i can do with him to build his trust in me???

THANK YOU!

have you tried the Tellington Touch? it is a means of calming animals and it is also an excellent way to bond with your pet.
there are also homeopathic remedies that help to calm animals. also, there are pet communicators who may be able to help you figure out what is in Dante's past, if you are open to that type of approach.
of course, there is nothing like calm words, calm energy and patience.

Patience- pet him and brush him all the time- make sure you are doing it in a happy voice. Just work with him and give it time. Chow chows are more high strung and tend to worry more and act out against "scary" things. The more you play with him and spend time with me, the more he will trust you.

Most dogs are not good for medicine anyways, so that is nothing to worry about. There are ways to work with that, such as sticking your hand in his mouth or shoving little treat chunks in his mouth (not down his throat, just placing them in his mouth).

He wasn't necessarily abused. I have a dog that is skitsy and I know he was never mistreated in any way.

I'd go through a positive obedience class....happiness and food treats and learning. It always helps. Also the program Nothing in Life is Free...it builds confidence in shy dogs, and teaches who's alpha in dominant dogs.

it takes a lot of time. your gonna need to be patient, and get your dog to trust you, and give him lots of treats. and make him think he's the only thing around.
SPOIL HIM.
