mon ami means my friend in french
but since you are female your friend should be saying mon amie (the feminine version), although on second thought both ami and amie both sound the same since the e is silent..
they could also be saying ma copine, which also means my friend

Mon ami means my (male) friend. Mon amie means my (female) friend. In French, different words can be masculine or feminine. Generally, you add an e to the end of a noun to change it to feminine form.
