I understand your frustration. I work in the IT field, and we even go through the same problem(s) as you are with other Techs. It depends on who you are asking. I have to admit a lot of IT people can be rude. I've seen it first hand when on a call, and vise versa, the cust. can be just as rude or demanding. They expect the end user calling in to understand the lingo, sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. Techs usually think the other person who is calling in or seeing for a repair is usually another Tech with the company they are helping. What they don't understand is sometimes the person is not a Tech, but just a user who pays for the service. As for the earlier comments, they must have gone through the same situations as you did. Negative statements will not get you resolution on a problem, and just make things harder. Don't take me wrong, there are some IT Techs that will be happy to explain how things work, if time permits. On call IT Techs are monitored by the company they work for. They are required to complete a list of inbound and outbound calls or complete a number of trouble tickets during their shift. If these companies who monitor these Techs during their work shift are not seeing productivity from them, can and will be replaced with someone who is more productive. This puts a lot of stress on the Tech, which could be a cause of the rudeness. Some are just rude through and through, but due to their productivity and knowledge, they are able to keep their positions. In your particular situation, what the Tech stated to you was improper and they should have looked into the problem more seriously. A suggestion for next time, take their name down and if you have a problem with them, report them to their supervisor. The Tech is representing a company, and I'm sure the company will follow up with the complaint.

IT people become that way for a simple reason. They must have a very good understanding of computers to get that job, that probably means they have a great deal of education in that field. After all that time spent learning and studying to get the job, I believe they dislike being given an opinion by someone who files, or answers phones (which by the way can be just as hard if not harder!) What I'm saying is I think it is a matter of pride.
Really, annoying though!

They probably deal better with machines than with people. It took me quite awhile to figure out that our IT guy was actually talking down to me and speaking slowly because he truly thought I lacked sufficient grey matter to understand. I just thought he explained things well..... He's since come to see the error of his ways because I talked to him about things other than tech. In tech, I AM an idiot whose computer may need to be protected from its used every now and then.
However, they may honestly not even realize that they come across as patronizing or rude. Gently and kindly point this out to them -- when you don't have a computer issue to be fixed! Don't be anonymous, go face to face and politely tell them. If they have any people-skills, they'll be glad for a gentle word from you on this matter.

As someone who used to work in IT, I can tell you it's because your boss (or theirs) is probably 'farming them out' for free computer and network help for their buddies. I was so overwhelmed doing freebie sidework, it took me days to get around to necessary repairs on the corporate network.
I wouldn't worry about the pesky IT folks too much, tho. They won't be around too much longer. Many of those jobs are being outsourced overseas now. It's what happened in my company. I totally took advantage of them on the non-comp agreement they wanted from me and went to culinary school on their dime. I'm much happier now.
If you really want to have some fun, turn your CPU upside down and tell them you can't get the CD in the drive. When one of them tells you the CPU is upside down, throw your hands up in exasperation and yell "That's what the OTHER guy/gal said before they 'fixed' it!!"

That's so funny you asked this. The gal at work that is our computer person always talks down to me whenever I have question. I hate having to ask this person anything.

They want you to stop downloading viruses off the internet just because it is the office computer and they can afford to fix it. Stop openning stuff at work that you wouldn't open at home.

I get them to explain things in HUGE detail (and don't they just love it) then look at them blankly and say "So, is it working or not?"
