I was at the park earlier with my son, when up came about 12 children aged about 2 years to maybe 7 or 8. The oldest girl who looked maybe 9 or 10 appeared to be in charge and was counting heads. Then she asked me to help put the youngest one into the baby swing. Then another came up and asked me to help her on a swing. These kids appeared to have no fear of strangers, and there were far to many really small ones there for the oldest to look after. Anyway, I called my local police dept. to report this as I feel it is a safety concern. This is not the first time I've seen them up there without an adult. The house they were coming from was too far out of sight for a parent to see them from home. Do you think I did the right thing? What would you do? My husband didn't think it was a big deal. Just curious.

A lot of people here allow their kids to roam around on the streets without supervision. Actually most people here allow it, and it drives me nuts, as those parents don't understand, if you don't allow it to your kids.
I don't allow it to DD, and also tell the parents, when she goes on playdates, and they give me weird looks for not allowing it. We live in a nearly zero-crime-area, very peaceful and such, but there are sex-offenders here just like everywhere, and accidents also happen everywhere, what, if one of the kids haves some accident and there's no adult in sight to help them?

it depends on the neighborhood, is it a bad one where there are a lot of druggies and gangs or os it a quiet, safe place where they can play? You said the house they came from was far away, but what about other houses? If one of the kids were in danger would it be possible for someone to step out of there homes and see whats going on? How big is the park? can the get lost easy? And is there a lake or pond that they can drownd in? If the park isn't safe for the kids, then you did the right thing.

It s a shame that nova-days it is a concern , when we were kids we used to play anywhere without adult supervision ,
there was no such thing as safety concern ...
Unfortunately we live in a crazy world of pedophiles , maniacs and other idiots , so ... yes ... you did the right thing , i would have done the same .
Makes you wander what do their parents think about ?

By reporting this to the police you have done several things:

1. Possibly made life a living hell for what may be very loving and good parents.

2. Possibly caused the children involved to suffer a lifetime of guilt if the parents get into trouble over this.

3. Added you own nosy self to the screeming hoard of busy bodies that are getting so much un-due attention.

I wouldn't have called the cops, that seems a little overboard to me and you could get people in a lot of trouble. But I'm not saying you did the wrong thing, you were just looking out for their safety. The way I see it is, if in your heart you feel you did the right thing then stand by it. I do give you credit for calling the cops though.

yes and no.
yes you did the right thing for calling the cops just like any carin person would do but are you really sure the oldest was 10? suppose she was like 16 but just had a baby face i think you should have asked some questions before you called, but if she really was 10 then great job! :)
