I have her on glucosamine and chondroitin, she been on that for about 5 months. The vet wants to put her on Deramaxx. Is that anything better or something not so expensive. Any idea's on anything else that works.

Arthritis drugs available from most expensive to cheapest (please note the more expensive it is the more safe on the kidney's and gastrointestinal system it is - perhaps a blood test determining your dogs kidney function would be a good idea.
1. Deramaxx
2.Previcox
3. Rimadyl
4. Metacam
5.Norocarp
6. Generic carprofen
They are all different Drugs but work in similar ways.
There is also a series of injections called cartrophen vet or zydax that are given one injection one week apart for 4 weeks that help repair joint and aid in pain reliefe.
Ask your vet for cheaper alternative.

Make sure you use glucosamine hydrochloride, not sulfate. Dogs' have a terribly hard time digesting and utilizing glucosamine sulfate so you don't really see benefits. Once we put our 12 yr old retriever on Dr. Maggies Joint Supplement with glucosamine hydrochloride, we saw a HUGE improvement in mobility and pain management. He now climbs the stairs, he can play with our 10 yr old shepherd, he can go on walks again and even manages to get on our high-top bed when we go out.
He was not a good candidate for Metacam or Deramaxx due to previous health problems, so we had to research for a quality supplement that would work. We found it!

I've been a vet tech for 7 years and the only arthritis meds I know about are deramaxx or rimadly and they are both exspensive, but they work well. Having her on glucosamine and deramxx will make her alot better. good luck

From experience with my own dog (he is an 11 year old Border Collie), who just started having some problems getting up. My vet and I chose this approach, I started my dog on Cosequin DS- with Oral Metacam and weekly injections of Adequin for 4 weeks, he did really well, he is on Maint Dose of Cosequin DS now and I have been giving him every other day Metacam. It has worked for him. Discuss it with your vet and see what other medications are available for your dog. God Luck and God Bless

Don't give rimaydyl...it's really hard on the liver. I don't know if the other meds affect the liver as badly but you should find out if there are any side effects before giving them to your dog.

there is a company that sells all-natural products for aging pets. i cant think of the name of it, but a good pet store should be able to help you. i have used their products and found them quite good. i will t ry to get back in touch with you if i think of the company name

dogs don't live that long and your dog is a senoir so it will have arthritis but not all dogs at that age have arthritis

aspirin works well... vet will give you the dosage,, you can give on a as needed basis..
