first of all, your body burns calories on it's own all day, even when you don't do exercise. Now of course if you start eating more than your body burns off you will gain weight. Try to find out what your resting metabolic rate is....that is how many calories your body needs to function and stay the same weight. (some scales or gyms will let you know...there is also a formula you can use...maybe google it).
Now if you just eat healthy, and only eat about 5 times a day (3 meals and 2 snacks) you should be fine with your calories. Why don't your try, just for one day to count how many calories you consume....it might surprise you. Just leave the junk food away....any maybe you should try exercising a little here and there. Even if you just do some jumping jacks in the morning. I'm on a low calorie diet at the moment and I'm not starving...I eat about 1400-1500 calories a day. I wouldn't recommend this for you since you are just 13 years old and need more nutrients. Just stick with the healthy stuff....like yoghurt, nuts, fruits, whole grains....etc. Try not to drink too much soda (too many calories) or eat junk food on a regular basis. My boyfriend is an athlete and has to consume a minimum of 4500 calories per day to stay the same weight....he tries, but he can barely even eat 3500....so see, it's not as easy as it looks (and I mean healthy calories...not getting it by eating chocolate)....hope this helps.

98 lbs is pretty skinny, unless you're like 4 feet tall. I don't think you need to cut down on calories. Try counting calories for a week, see how much you eat. I really don't think many people eat more than 3500 a day. And to answer your first question, a lot of people are overweight. The US currently has 65% of the population overweight, so it's not everyone, but its a majority!

Everyone demands 3500 EXTRA energy to acquire a pound of fats. If your every day calorie demands are 2500 energy, for illustration, you'll ought to consume 6000 energy in an afternoon to acquire a pound of fats.

Because things like sleeping, eat, reading, sitting, wathcing TV, walking to the bathrrom or kitchen, all burn calories. If you're a couch potato (which you're not since you go to school) you would burn about 1400 cals.

Also, for food to get digested, it's a chemical process which burns calories. Eating fruits (for example apples) and veggies (such as celery) burns calories as well.

And things like yogurt (light n fit 60 cals) have 20% calcium and 20% Vit D which if you're dieting, they help you lose even more weight.

I really hope this helped.

You'd be surprised how many calories you're truly eating. I doubt you're eating 3500 because even I, at times, find it hard to consume 3500 calories and I'm 6'0 and 194lbs. Unless you ingurgitate every other hour, as I do, this isn't the easiest task. The reason why you're not seeing any negative repurcutions has to do with the fact that you're young -- and when you're young your metabolism is extremly high -- you're growing, and you may be overestimating your caloric intake.

wow...do they teach anything in schools these days?
Did you stop for a second and think that you need to burn food just to stay alive?
The person above is right, you need 1200 calories a day just to stay alive. Most people need around 1600 to 2000 calories.
Even if you "barley" (its spelt barely) exercise, at your ate, you probably need closer to 2000 calories.

your body naturally burns off calories as the minutes go by. You may not be doing any physical exercise but your bodys matabolism is working hard to break down the food and store it as energy. You may consume over 3000 calories a day but if you are moving around your body will burn calories off itself. If you eat junk food that is high in sugar your body takes that and usually stores it as fat. resulting in being overweight/having problem areas.
