benadryl....no just kidding don't do that. pack some of his favorite small toys in a bag just for him...between you and him, you should have a bag for you, a bag for him, and his diaper bag. add one bag if daddy or someone else is with you. he's over 2, so he will require his own seat and ticket and everything, bring his carseat on the plane, make it more like a car ride. bring along his (and your) favorite snacks. tell him starting a few days before that you will be traveling to get him ready for it. he may not seem to understand, but he most likely will. he may sleep, he may not, that mostly depends on how he is in the car. if he falls alseep on most car trips (100 miles or more) he will most likely sleep a little on his own. also, if he has a lovey, make sure he has it with him when he gets on the plane, or carry it for him. my oldest son's first plane ride was when he was 4 1/2 months old, (and it was also my first, and i believe my hubby's first as well) and his next one was 9 months later. the first was much easier, he slept the whole way....lol. the second he didn't want to sit still, and we weren't really prepared enough for that. give him a sippy of juice or something (other than milk) that you know he will drink on take off and landing to help his ears. take a puzzle for toddlers for him to do along with the other toys. if you are relaxed about it, he will be more relaxed. i noticed that when my hubby was holding him he was much more calm than when i had him, mostly because i was pregnant and slightly worried (we couldn't afford 3 tickets, so he sat in our lap).if you get him as prepared for it as possible, and you are relaxed during the trip, he should be fine. best of wishes.

It depends on the child really , you just have to see how he reacts and act accordingly .
My son was traveling with me since he was 6 months old . I cant say that he was in any discomfort on the plane , the only thing is you are in a limited space and there is not much for him to do .
When he was 2 we went on 8 hours flight , i must say it wasn't easy to keep him occupied , we just did what we could , read the books ,played puzzles, then he felt asleep for couple of hours.
its tiring but manageable , just take his favorite books , games ,puzzles and see how he goes .
Good luck - you will need it

How sad it is that so many parents push drugs on their children, to make the adults tolerate the child better! Any parent who goes to a pediatrician who advises giving Benadryl for a plane ride should change doctors. I would not worry- your little one will sense your anxiety and react negatively to it. Just bring lots and lots of different things to play with. Definitely bring his favorite blanket or stuffed animal. The best thing we ever did for our little ones (we have 4) is purchase their own seats. That way, you can bring the carseat on board, and since they are used to riding in it anyways, it was no big deal for them. We have travelled to Europe (8+ hour flight) with all 4 of them, and it was not a problem. You just have to really plan and prepare! Check out some different websites regarding travel with toddlers. Have a great flight!

bring some games, like a coloring book. and if u have one, a portable dvd player and barney, teletubies, bob the builder, dora, w/e is there favorite. handy mandy? lol. u can also give them some medicine, and so they can get some sleep, otherwise they might cry from the ear-popping, and i'm just gonna say, i think most people get really annoyed when there is a crying baby, and they are trying to sleep or something. where are u going? hope u have fun!

Please give him a binki, or a bottle, when the flight is taking off and landing, this will help him to equalize the pressure in his ears and make him more comfortable ~ he will be less likely to cry. This will increase your comfort level and his. Also take toys, his favorite blanket. He may or may not sleep.

We are from Germany and me and my mother moved to all the way to the USA. Well my two much younger sisters where born in the US, and every summer since they were born we go back to visit family in Germany. Thats like a 13hr+ trip...
She always gave them a little bit of dimatap to help then sleep through it. Its not wrong, in fact she asked the pediatrition if this was ok and he told her it was fine. Not alot but just a little for the way there...Trust me, he will thank you for it. It is soooo much better to sleep through a plane ride then be awake through it. just give him a small dose, set his head on your lap and let him lay on the seat, and he will be right out.

I agree with a few other answers on here. I think you should give him benadryl- I actually know an RN who gives her children benadryl before they get on a plane, and she says it calms them down wonderfully. Also, don't make a big deal out of it, and make it an adventure for him. "Wow, we get to ride on that big airplane!" See about getting him wings and/or saying hello to the pilot. If he honestly thinks you think it is the neatest thing in the world, he probably will, too.

i would have to agree with the no drugs answer..(unless you know your child has motion sickness )just plan on making the trip fun...do what you would normally do when they get cranky..
make the entire experience fun and educational..buy a book about flying and read it a zillion times before the trip..bring it with you...then it wont seem as unfamilair when he goes..and dont forget to let him meet the pilot and get his first wings!!!2 year olds are awesome and often misunderstood...just have fun!!!
