The best pizza places are in Brooklyn, not Manhattan.
Di Fara on Avenue J and East 14th Street in the Midwood section of Brooklyn
Totonno's on Neptune Avenue and 15th Street in Coney Island
L&B Spumoni Gardens on 86th Street in Bensonhurst
Elegante Pizza on Fifth Avenue and 69th Street in Bay Ridge
Nunzio's Pizza in Staten Island
In Manhattan: I would say Lombardi's on Spring Street in Soho is probably the best.

I'm not a pizza lover, but I have a hard time saying no to pizza from John's. The only down side about Johns, well actually there are two, the first is the lines to get in, the second is that you can't get it by the slice, they only sell it by the pie. But, it's so good that you get two people and you can wiz through a pie really quickly. Everything on the menu is great. It's a real New Yorker's place. Don't think it's known by people outside of the city. The original one is in the village, and I know they have one in the 60's on the east side. There may be another one, not sure.

So why are you crossing the river to get good pizza? There are plenty of places in NJ. I'm suddenly craving Mr. Assante on Route 22 in Green Brook. There was this place in the Pheasant Run shopping center (in Warren) that was also quite good. There used to be this great place in Westfield, called... (thinking back 30 years)... Sorrento's. I think it was on Rahway Avenue. There was another place on South Avenue near where the bridge crosses the railroad tracks.
In other words, look to your own back yard before looking elsewhere.

Arturo's. Pizza Hut -- no real New Yorker would say that.
Ray's -- a joke -- is that Original Ray's, Famous Ray's, Original Famous Ray's or Famous Original Ray's -- a bunch of mediocrities trying to cash in on an urban legend. The Real Ray's no longer exists.
