I'm going into 10th grade and trying to be a drum major for a military style band. What are some tips?

-Learn how to conduct music (if you don't already know how)
-Being a section leader helps. Being the drum major isn't just about standing on the podium and waving your arms. It's a leadership position.
-Talk to your band director about it. He/She may have some tips for you. There are also training courses, like Drum Major Camps, that you could learn some invaluable information from.

I'm going to be a drum major next year, and at my school we have practice sessions for people trying out for the drum major position a few mornings a week to help them prepare for the actual tryouts (at my school, only freshman can try out, and you advance to be the drum major your senior year.) We help them with marching and conducting, but leadership skills are also important. In addition to knowing how to march and being good at it, they also have to know how to teach people how to march, since that is one of the responsibilities in our band. Every band is different however, so you should know what you'll need to know how to do for your band. My advice is to talk to your past/current drum major for advice. They're students, and they love helping others... that's why they're the drum major! And when you try out, just be confident. Good luck!
