I am preparing to lay laminate flooring. I see in th directions that you should lay in longitudinal to the light source. Does that mean with the light source, or purpendicular to the light source

It's usually best to install with, or parallel to, the main source of NATURAL light. In this way the outside light will show up the end seams and not the much more numerous side seams. If your room is much longer in one direction than another, you might want to consider laying the laminate down the length of the room, even if this means running the board perpendicular to the light source. This will produce less waste and make your room look bigger. If you have normal windows in the room, the outside light won't be much of an issue. Sliding glass doors and large picture windows may cause a little more concern. In the end it's really up to you. Lock together a few boards and see how they look in the light, then decide.

They are talking about sunlight. Look at the window and then place the boards so they run towards the window and not across the window. If you have more than one window then you should go with the one that lets in the most sunlight. Why? The seams will be less noticeable when you do it this way...hard to explain.
