My boyfriends pom went in to the clinic yesturday because he wasnt acting normal. They said that he has pancreatitis, and I am wondering how good of a chance he has to recover. The vets seem to skip around my question.
Thanks :)

Pancreatitis is an extremely painful condition. Animals and Humans do certainly die from it, however it depends on how quickly treatment was sought and begun and how servere the case is. After 12-24 hours on fluid in a case that was definately going to survive you would see a marked improvement, if no improvement is seen then I would have grave hopes of survival but don't give up.
After your boyf's Pomeranian has been on fluids for 18 hours reask the vet what his chances are they should have more of an idea by then.
Do you know what food has caused this (usually a fatty meal) if not reassess what he had eaten 12-36 hours prior to symtoms and avoid those foods in future!
Goodluck

Pancreatitis, so an inflamed pancreas? Alot depends on the care, if you are willing to stick to the bland diet, keep the dog's weight down and generally follow the vet's direction to the T, when it comes to treatment. If you insist on giving fatty foods and over doing it with things that he shouldn't have then prognosis isn't good.
They can sometimes develop other complications due to the pancreas problems, and alot depends too on how early you caught it, how advanced things are etc.

a dog with pancreatitis has to have a very bland diet, absolutely nothing spicy or strange. my sisters chihuahua had it and lived to be 16 yrs old. she cooked chicken liver and rice for him, no spices. watch carefully for blood in the stool. buy him food with very low fat content. nothing over 5%. you can find some canned foods with only 3%. if you cook for him, trim all fat from the meat. with good care he will live his full life span. good luck
