Does anyone's cat _not_ have selective hearing?

But that applies not only to cats but almost everything with hearing, they only hear what they want to hear, don't you think? My cats not only have selective hearing but they have this "oh, you couldn't possibly have meant that `DO NOT' stuff for me, it must have only been for the other cat so I'm going right ahead and doing it...." And I always find myself going, "didn't I just say not to do that??? What, you think you're the exception?" and then the cat gets ticked off at me giving me "well, you didn't say it applied to EVERYONE. Humphf!"

Personally I think every living thing does. Cats and dogs actually pick up the change in pitch and even the under lying emotions so they know when to ignore your calls.

My wife has always said that when a person finally understands that the cat is the master and the human the pet they will also understand why they *all* have selective hearing. ;)

It's called cat humour.
Why should the cat take any notice of you when the rewards are outweighed by the effort required to respond.

Yeah. not only do they have selective deafness but they also have other weird habbits too. e.g. My cat natters like mad for food but when i put the bowl down she sniffs at it and looks at me as if to say "and this is.....?" then she turns round and goes out!
