Before Adam and Eve there were people who believed in many Gods. The Primordial Adam and Eve story was written to emphasize to the world that there is only One God and the Jews starting from their first man and woman who were both enlightened were called the chosen ones. Not because they are favored but because they were just chosen to start the news. It is human nature to fear or idolize anything that is beyond his comprehension specially during the time that there was no school of higher learnings like we have in this generation. People then believed in superstitions and natural phenomena that were proven by stories of mythologies, magics and fantasies.
In the modern days like ours, there had been so many things that people have put their mind into like money, power and possessions. Many will even die for all the three and that is kind of Gods that the true God is talking about. People tend to forget Him and all those that are just supposed to be the means of living comfortably made greed set in and money becomes an obssession for wants instead of tools to satisfy the needs. It even at times becomes more important in the lives of man than recognizing the existence of God. There is nothing weird than that except your ignorance in understanding it.

First, like such a number of others you're examining the ten Commandments with a twenty first. Century mentality as though they have been written in English and for persons who think of ways we do. that's to not say that the ten Commandments are actually not desirable as we communicate, purely that we fail to appreciate how they have been meant. at the start, the ten Commandments initially have been nicely-called "The Decalogue," or the ten words. those 'Ten words' have been inscribed in God's Holy Language (particularly than modern English) and have been divided into the 'do' and the 'do not' lists. initially the ten Commandments have been ten single words written in a less complicated language that conveyed a which skill very nearly impossible to translate right into a single English observe. case in point, 'thou shall not kill...' A extra maximum appropriate translation for this Commandment into English could be: "No-homicide," if a single observe existed in English that would desire to precise this which skill. None-the-much less, in our own day and age 'homicide' remains unacceptable jointly as 'killing' is each and every so often unavoidable and might additionally be very mandatory. Adultery, thievery, mendacity and covetous conduction all defy suitable ethical norms and fall into the 'do not' class. what's so superb approximately this? the 1st 5 Commandments are addressed to a people who everyday a Covenant with God and only factor out the 'policies of habit.' returned, what's so superb approximately this? As an atheist you will desire to evaluate your self an urbane and state-of-the-paintings individual lots too clever to have faith in God. the ten Commandments have been meant for a simplier human beings so why are you even bothering us undemanding-persons on the non secular and Spirituality communicate board of Yahoo Questions and solutions??? Are you perhaps not purely an atheist yet additionally a... Troll? Inquiring minds want to appreciate! H

Read the books of Genesis and Exodus. In Genesis, Rachel (Jacob's wife) took her father's (Laban's) idols from his house. In Exodus, there were the Egyptians, who, as we know, worshipped many deities. Also, while Moses went up Mt. Sinai to get the 10 Commandments, the Israelites and Aaron made a god in the image of a calf.

Now, can you see why God made the first Commandment? People were worshipping other gods. It's not that there are other gods, it's just the the people were worshipping other gods or idols.

There were certainly other "gods" - this word refers also to the idols people had (household gods). This does not mean there were actually other gods.

By the way, really the first commandment (if you ask a Jewish a person) was be fruitful and multiply.

By the way jljimenez: if you are advocating that someone else follow your philosophy about God, then aren't you also proposing a religion? In which case, by your own admission, we shouldn't follow your advice.

At the time of the Exodus the Hebrews were leaving a place they had lived in for 400 years. The people of that place worshiped many gods. It was important for God to make them understand He was the I AM and first.

Also, anything that you worship or spend all your time chasing or following can become a god to you. God has no problem with our affection for other things but He wants us to understand they will become a problem for us if we let them take precedence over God.

What it means is that you should not make up your own gods.......The Isrealites made statues when Moses was up on Mount Sinai and prayed to the statues. God did not like that they were praying to another god that was not Him.
The main message in that commandment is to believe in Him and only Him as your god and that all other gods-human thought up or whatever-should not be before him, like it states.

No, God is not talking about other gods equal to himself, but rather idols and false gods created by man.

I once heard someone say you can see what a person's gods are by looking in their checkbook. In other words we, as humans, set up many things as 'gods' in our lives. Whatever is most important in your life - even religion can become an idol. (religion being a set of activities related to faith, but not faith itself) Christians have long understood that God must be first in our life without exception.

He is the one and only God. What the first commandment is saying is that you shouldn't idolized other things before you praise and honor God. In a senes, the term "no other gods" refers to literally other gods, money, posessions, etc. You are to put nothing before God in your life. This commandmend is so oftenly broken too, even by Christians, because it is not our human nature to put God first, and as Christians, we need to work to put God first in our lives over everything.

People at that time were making up different gods: the sun god, the moon god, god of the oceans, etc. The 1st Commandment is basically saying God is the only real god out there.

I believe God is referring to false gods, if you read in the Bible, the Jews were always tossing Him aside for some gold cow or something.
