If you are afraid about the vet bills you could always get pet insurance. It runs anywhere from I think $20 a month to around $50 depending on what kind you get and how much it covers. I know with my first German Shepherd we paid around $200 from him and never had any health problems. Then my second German Shepherd My husband bought at Petland (which I DO NOT recommend) and paid $1000 for him and no health problems their either. This time around we decided to go with a German import and he will be protection trained because one, my husband frequently goes out of town on business and two, we have 2 Bulldogs and I have heard too many stories of people's houses getting broken into and their Bulldog getting stolen. So my current Shepherd, along with our security system, will be for not only my protection but also for the protection of my Bulldogs. So far we haven't had any health problems with our current Shepherd either but he is only 11 months old. He is out of top German bloodlines and cost us around $1500.

Ok, these dogs are kinda hard to take care of, but not really. These dogs are sometime violent, so you would need to train it so it won't be aggressive when it is older. However, there is a lot of mony to pay for its vaccinations and other stuff it needs. For vaccinations, they are usually around 100 dollars a visit, so i guess about 25-50 per shot. Also, you have to buy them quality dog food, which is 20-30 dollars per 15 lbs. bag This will last you usually 1month+, with 2 meals a day. Also cost of dog shampoo, bedding, collars, and leashes: 10 dollars, 25, 5-10, and 25-50 for big dog leashes. However, don't let the price scare you. These dogs are very nice and cuddly, if you spend a lot of time with it every day. You can even ride him when he is older! NO, I'm Kidding, Really DON'T do that.

A price on what?
If you are talking puppy, you 'll likely have to get the vaccinations finished, and spay / neuter.
An older dog if it's spayed / neutered you'll have your
yearly shots, as long as no health issues come up.
It's hard to give a price, when you aren't specific in what you think you might need from the vet. And because different vets in different areas tend to charge different prices.

Pets are a huge lifetime responsibility. They need to be seen AT LEAST once a year for a check up, get vaccinated yearly (or bi-yearly depending on where you live), get heartworm tested yearly, recieve heartworm preventitive monthly, have quality food for their entire lifetime, be licensed, groomed, and exercised. Then you have the emergencies...he may or may not get ill, he may or may not develop hip displaysia, ear infections, contract fleas/ticks, run into the street and get hit by a car, get into a dogfight, develop food allergies, skin conditions, etc. If you are unable or unwilling to care for the dog no matter what, then you are better off not getting a dog. Dogs are great, but they do require a LIFETIME commitment from you. If you are willing to accept the responsibility and quite possibly set aside other things that you may want, then good luck and I wish you the best. Just take it into consideration first..

I love my German Shepherd! I wouldn't trade him for anything... But don't be fooled, they can get expensive! My dog has allergies, and the testing is rather pricey. Also he's HUGE so he eats a lot. Shepherds can also be destructive when bored, so training is crucial- guess what? That costs money.
If you arn't prepared to spend money on an animal (regardless of the type) then you arn't ready for a pet. Period.

I would not trade anything for my German Shepherd but not just anyone should have one. Very loyal to their master and mine is very very protective. I have to make sure no one gets too close to him especially if I am around. If you get one make sure to socialize him with other people and dogs. I couldn't with him so now I have to be careful with him.
