Hi there! A colleague of mine has recently found out that she is around 4 weeks pregnant. She got a black outline tattoo a few days before she found out and is now worried that it could somehow harm the baby. Is there any advice that I could pass on? Thanks.

ETA: she already has many tattoos over her body, so she knows the basics.

It's fine. The reasons for no tattoos during pregnancy are that it will take the tat longer to heal (because the body is focused on the baby) and an open wound can get infected, which can lead to complications for both baby and mom.

Tell her to follow her normal aftercare and everything will be fine.

she should be fine. there is just always a risk associated with getting a tattoo like getting an infection or a communicable disease. anything that happens to your body when pregnant will happen to the baby too. for that reason it is suggested not to get tattoos or piercings. but she didn't know so there's nothing she can do about it now. the chance is slim for anything to happen, especially if she went to a clean trusted shop.

She should notify her doctor to watch for anything in the future. Unknowingly tattooing a pregnant woman is by pure accident and unless it's huge, gets infected, rejects, something goes severly wrong, the baby should be fine. But yeah, she should tell her doctor so that any possible side effects can be watched for through out!

I'm sure all is well!!! As long as sanitary practices and all other due protocols were observed.
However I often ask how many folks are aware that getting a tattoo means that you can't donate blood ,blood products or tissue/organs for the next five years. I would hate to find myself unable to render life-saving help to a relation or other dear one just because I went in for a spot of "self expression " a couple of years before.

Trust me, she's fine. As long as everything was clean the baby will be fine. I got a tattoo before I knew I was pregnant and everything turned out to be okay.

Let her know to bring up any concerns with the doctor, even if they seem silly. You just can't be too careful.

On About.com, it says (and my tattoo artist agrees) that the general reason why tattoo artists prefer not to/will not tattoo pregnant women is that possible side effects from getting tattooed while pregnant are not known and haven't been studied, but it should be ok.

No it wont hurt the baby at all!! as long as she dont get one on her stomach it should work out just fine. My cousin got one on her back when she was pregnant and her baby is just fine!

She should be tested for hepatitis immediately. It happens. The inks probably won't harm the fetus but she shouldn't get it filled in until after she gives birth.
