I am looking to lose weight and cleanse my body. Will fasting on green tea, juice, without any added sugars, both, or water for a week work? If so, will it make me sick? I am only 15. By doing that will I get an adequate amount of protein? If not, what should I take for protein? Should I fast 100% on the liquid or should I add one, small meal in addition to my fasting? Any other information/advice would be extremely helpful! Thanks!

While doing this, I would continue to follow my regular exercise routine, which is somewhat vigorous.

I would highly suggest substantially reducing the level of exercise during fasting. if the caloric intake is not sufficient to support the daily biological functions (BMR) and the level of activity the metabolic rate will slow. once you return to a normal diet you can return to a high level of exercise

If you fast for a week you will lose weight. You will probably go through a few headaches or digestive upsets but you will feel better afterwards as your body cleans itself.
The best author on fasting is Arnold Ehret, from the turn of the century--19th--not fact for fact but his overall thinking. You will get a kick out of his photograph--string tie, goatee--but also quite clear eyes.
As for getting adequate protein, I'm sure you know the answer is you will not. It is not impossible to take a protein supplement during the fast but it will counteract the cleansing process. A week long fast will only do you good. However, that is assuming you maintain a healthy diet beforehand. If you are malnourished, then a week without food could be bad--but that should be obvious.
For me, the one indispensible feature about fasting is it is easy once you get past the first day. It doesn't require any food choices and afterwards your tastes can be gratified with extremely simple foods which earlier you would have rejected.
But for losing weight and maintaining muscle the best thing is a good high protein reducing diet.

You will not starve. You will not instantly become thin. Fasting is consuming only liquids. When the body does not have to deal with digesting solid food and getting rid of the waste that solid food creates, it can concentrate on getting rid of toxins. The most common reason to fast is to eliminate disease or from the body.

How much weight will I lose?

The main benefit offered by a fast, to those who wish to lose weight, is the speed of the weight loss. To see a person drop 30-to-40 pounds in a 30-day juice fast is to see a person totally transform his life. Self-esteem is given a boost and for the first time in their life, discipline becomes a lifestyle. The fast becomes a catalyst for a total life overhaul. People start dressing better, showing more confidence, becoming more organized, more dedicated in relationships and more at peace.

Initially, weight loss can be as high as three-to-four pounds per day, but as the fast continues, the average loss will be one pound-per-day. If you are juice fasting and not losing weight, the juice is supplying all the calories you need. You may have to cut down on the juices or alternate between water fasting and juice fasting if losing weight is part of your goal. The slower your metabolism is the slower the weight loss.

Try to stay focused on the healthy things you are doing to improve your life rather than being consumed with the number of pounds lost each day. Water retention can vary your weight five pounds so watching the scale can be frustrating. The best motivation to fast is for physical and spiritual health. Be patient; the fasting process is slow. Be thankful the toxins are leaving your body. Do not have unrealistic expectations. Give your body the time it needs to do the work of cleansing.

Fasting And Metabolism

The fear is that while fasting, the metabolism will slow down and afterward there will be more weight gained than before the fast. Initially, any calorie reduction will cause a lowering in the BMR or base metabolic rate. Cleansing will bring health that will increase metabolic performance and energy output. In other words, you will eat less and feel more energetic.

After fasting, the body is more efficient. Digestion is better due to a cleaner colon. The colon walls have been cleansed of impacted feces, allowing improved absorption of nutrients. The good news is that greater efficiency equals enhanced energy. Healthy people burn more calories. They also eat less because they are more active and feel better about themselves. They don't need food as a security blanket.

The greatest impact you can have on increasing your resting metabolism is exercise. After a workout, you can be sitting on the couch reading while burning calories, as the muscles are grabbing glucose from the blood to replace glycogen supplies. The key to weight loss is fewer calories and more exercise. A diet high in raw food provides fewer, low-density calories, and higher-fiber, more-filling foods.

Oh, by the way, a slower metabolism diminishes aging. A tortoise can live to 400 hundred years of age.

First of all, at only 15 are you sure weight loss is a good idea? Cleansing your body is a great idea at any age but I am just coming out the other end of a serious eating disorder so please don't take this too far!
A juice cleanse is an excellent idea, your body will not lack any nutrients etc over the period of a week and you will be much better off to go without foods all together. I strongly advise that you don't continue with your normal exercise routine, tone it down a bit and try to get lost of rest - this way your body has the maximum energy available to cleanse itself.
I think one of the most important things to look at is what you eat when you finish your cleanse. What is your diet like now? Do you eat SAD (Standard Australian/American Diet) with lots of fast foods or highly processed foods such as bread and pasta? What about meat and dairy? I am obviously biased here as I am a raw vegan and I think this is the best way anyone can possibly live, for maximum energy, cleanliness (of body), delicious food and all round hapiness. I strongly urge you to look into raw food, it's like a long-term cleanse.

In order to fast, you need to not have nutrients, per se, because it defeats the purpose of fasting and will trick your body into believing you are not fasting, but starving.

The best fast is a lemon juice & distilled water fast. I have done a two week fast on this to rid my body of some liver problems. It worked and I lost 30 pounds.

You will gain the weight back if you don't change your diet when you get off the fast. When you get off the fast, I would suggest staring with some bananas and other fruit to get your body digesting again. Don't be afraid of fasts. I would suggest you check out some books on the subject to get some background in doing it first.

Not eating for short periods of time is not harmful.

You can't just take in less calories or less food to get skinnier. It gets a lot more complicated. Your body has what is called a starvation response. If you don't eat as much or burn more calories then you take in on a daily basis, your body will respond and slow down your metabolism in order to conserve energy. And even with the smaller amount of energy it does burn, it still won't burn fat. It will instead burn your protein storages. Where is protein in your body stored? Bingo! Your muscles. Not eating as much daily will slow down your metabolism and cause your body to literally eat itself alive. You have to "trick" your body into losing weight by not letting it trigger this starvation response. You can do this using the zig-zag method. Here's what you do:
1) Find your basal metabolic rate. Just google that and you'll find the formula.
2) CALORIES COUNT. Keep track of the number of calories you take in. To zig- zag, take in about 500 calories less then your basal metabolic rate for three days. no more than three days. Then, for 1-2 days, take in 5% more than your basal metabolic rate. (about 125 calories more). Doing this will trick your body into not going into starvation mode.
3) DO NOT get your calories from junk. Junk food won't help you any.
4) Eat at least six meals a day. Make each meal a small portion. How do you do that? Well, you take your basal metabolic rate and divide it by 6. Eat that amount of calories every meal. Have a meal about every 6 hours.
5) It's always better to burn the fat not starve it. Do some cardio. Go running, jump rope, do stairs, aerobics, whatever! Just don't sit and do nothing. If you wanna watch T.V., jog in place as you do.

If you do this, you'll lose weight, and have more energy. And you'll get more toned from that cardio. You might aso want to get a copy of a book that explains all this in great detail. That book is called, Burn the fat, Feed the Muscle.

please don't do this. your body is still growing, and you need a healthy and complete diet now to ensure that you will be healthy as an adult. this includes carbs, fat and proteins, with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. you still have a good 4-5 years to grow, and if you mess your body up now, you will be stuck with it.

fasting does nothing more than dehydrate you. the concept of "detoxfying" or "cleansing" is a complete lie. you end up losing a few pounds in water weight which will come back as soon as you ingest anything. furthermore, drinking only liquids (especially those with caffeine like green tea) for long periods while exercising a lot can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. this can cause heart arrythmias, which can be quite dangerous. is losing a few pounds for a few days worth risking your life?

there is no protein in juice, water or tea. make an appointment with a doctor or nutritionist to find out a healthy eating plan for someone your age and stick to it. develop healthy eating habits and learn to love yourself now and you will be grateful when you are older.

Well fasting is good, but only when you understand it's real meaning, today most of us think that fasting is a type of a church diet. fasting is about cleaning your body and soul and not losing weight.

You just try to eat little less than you usually do, but never try to skip dinner or lunch in that way will destroy both your organs and mental health. Just try eating less than normal but not up too starvation. it is important that girls understand that they are gaining wight just because they don't eat normally or more than they should eat.

If you have tea and juice only you'll get stomach aches because that's acidic stuff.
I recommend eating a lot of fibre rich foods like wholegrain cereals and beans of all kinds. That way you'll lose weight through the week without feeling hungry.
