Hi there.

!!!NOTE!!!: Right-clicking on the file and choosing a program from a list just doesn't work. First of all, .exe files are executable programs, and aren't meant to be opened by another program. They're self running programs, not requiring other programs to run them. All other file extensions (besides .msi .com) can be opened by another program.

An exception of an .EXE files that are created from compiled archived files [.zip .rar to .exe] can be opened by Winzip, Winrar etc.

I'm gonna suggest a virus scan, as it seems suspicious you can't run executables but have it load with WMP. It's part of some virus's function to prevent you running that program, and somehow bypassed your antivirus scan using an executable antivirus program.

Try running an online virus scan.

You can try using System Restore to before when you started having these problems. Make sure to save your files before doing this as a last resort.

Hope this helps.

This is a safe link where you can download winrar for free here http://bit.ly/1v2nWkq

You can use winrar to unzip zip files (or to open compressed folder). 7zip or winzip are other softwares you can use for the same purpose but winrar is by far the best one. All these programs work in a very similar way: you just have to right click the file to zip or unzip any folders or files.

If you don't want a trial version don't worry. The trial period of winrar never ends so you can use it for free with no limitations.

With WINRAR you will be able to open all the type of compressed folder like file .zip, .rar, .7z, .7zip .iso, .tar, .jar etc... that's the main reason why I recommend it.

Your assosiation with EXE's are broken and EXE is NOT listed in the FILE TYPES list and you can't use OPEN WITH on an EXE file (only if it's a self extracting compressed file like a zip or rar file).

If you are using XP visit this web page and scroll down to the Windows XP section:

http://filext.com/faq/broken_exe_association.php

If you don't want to do all the reading and you have XP download and run this file:
http://filext.com/WinXP_EXE_Fix.reg

For any other version of windows you'll have to read the webpage.

That should work.
