I just got my braces off and my orthodontist just told me i have to wear my retainer 24/7... I'm not sure if he was exadurating but i don't know if i could do that. I've seen people not wear there retainers but 24/7 i find ridiclous. Would i still be able to keep my teeth where they are at right now by just wearing them at night when i sleep?

You should wear your retainer all day except when eating. If you don't your teeth can actually go right back to the position of where they were the day you walked into the Ortho office. This is no lie! Do you have to wear it all your life? Hell no. If you want your teeth to remain as straight as they are now everday for a year should be good. Then only at night for the 2nd year. After that, never again. I made the mistake of only wearing it at night and my teeth aren't as straight as the day my braces were removed. I still look good but I know I looked better.

Most of the time they will tell you to wear it for a few months or a year 24/7 but then after a while they may just tell you to wear it every night. Most EVERYONE who has had a retainer has had to wear it 24/7 right when they got their braes off. Once your teeth have moved to be a little bit more permanent you can start wearing it less. Listen to what they say. Sometimes when I don't feel like wearing mine at night or just forget I don't wear it after a while not wearing it for a longer amt of time is not a big deal.

I understand that you don't want to wear your retainer everyday, 24/7, but please listen to your dentist!! Most likely, you will wear it every day for a while, maybe a few months, then you might switch to nighttime, or everyother day, then slowly you will wear it less and less. I don't wear mine anymore, but right now, it's very important to wear it, because your teeth have just been moved, and they want to go back to their original place. I know two ppl who had to get their braces back on because they didn't wear their retainer! Trust me, you'll get used to it!

You should probably wear it all the time (except when you eat) for the first year. From then on you'll be fine with just wearing at nighttime.
