My advise, as an American living in the northern part of Italy (trento) is that you should NOT go in mid-summer. Many shops are closed as thats when Italians go on vacation. Also that is when airfare is highest. Spring break is the cheapest time to go (april/march) and of course christmas is beautiful here. I don't see many christmas lights on houses but there is some. I have traveled to Rome and Pisa, and both are lovely but I prefer Venice as it is more calm. If you cannot speak any Italian, rome is great because it is very accommodating to english speaking tourists. Other advise for you...dont drive (we drive very aggressively) prepare for everyone and everything to be late, siesta is when everything is closed from 11-3 daily...so be prepared, eat a lot of ice cream here and pizza, we have very few convenience stores, the people are very friendly if you try to speak italian, avoid tourist looking restaurants- the food is overpriced and not very good, and if you are invited to someones house bring a gift (wine, food etc)... travel by train, its cheap and easy- just dont fall asleep and miss your stop! There is much history and culture here so enjoy the slower atmosphere and drink wine. Live it up... stop by and say hi to me in Trent

Summer is more pricey than any time of year. But there are more things to do! August is the month most Italians take off for vacation, so anywhere you go especially the smaller towns, a lot of shops are closed. I don't know where exactly you are looking at going, but summer is a good time.

Spring is nice as well, all the towns are like waking up from the winter. You usually have to go before Easter for a cheaper ticket, but sometimes you can get a steal.

Christmas is fun, too. If you go north there is snow and the south has none. But there isn't as much going on. Cheapest ticket too!

In my opinion go in the summer or the spring. I don't really know goes on up north during those times, but down south, there are all sorts of festivals going on. Especially where I go, which the region of Puglia. All the little towns every week have some little festivals going on.

BUT take the time to learn SOME italian, because some will be more than happy to take advantage of a tourist and that applies to all of italy.

Spring is best in my view, It also depends a little as to where in Italy you would like to go. The main tourist towns like Florence, Rome and Venice are terrible in July. If you are planning on visiting these spring or Christmas would definitely be better.

Definitely spring!
Summer is too hot and crowded.
Christmas is too cold and very focused on the holidays.
As for where to go-everywhere in Italy is worth going to-a week to 10 days is a mere blink of an eye, so enjoy one or two cities, instead of running all over the place.

Never been, but Italy is known for having good weather year round, so unless something is happening there that you really want to see, you pretty much can't go wrong. Obviously though, it will be warmer in Spring Break and Summer than in Winter.
