I am sure she can get a tattoo. Just call around and explain the situation to reputable tattoo artists. A reputable tattoo artist always wears disposable gloves and uses disposable needles, so the stuff will not be used on another customer. If someone says that don't want to take the chance, then just respect that decesion. You need to be brutally honest with everyone you talk to though. And make sure that you find someone who doesn't gossip. You don't want your friends personal health issues being talked about to everyone that happens to go in there. If you have to travel a little bit out of town, then do it. Tattoos are normal, and if your friend wants one, then she should go for it. HIV shouldn't stop her from living her life.

She MIGHT be able to. We always ask for medical clearance - in other words, a sign off by the doctor.

Docs don't like immune compromised people getting tattoos because any risk of infection is something they don't want for their patients. Also, it may not heal nicely and may need lots of touch ups.

In response to another answer, it is pretty much illegal to demand a potential client reveal this information. Most do it to be up front, but we are supposed to be treating each person walking in the door as if they are HIV positive, or WORSE HBV or HCV (hepatitis B or C) positive, because these are way stronger viruses.

Next, it can pretty much get you a lawsuit if you refuse them based only on the fact that you don't want to work on them. It is discrimination, like it or not.

She won't be able to get tattooed. The standard disclaimer that a person must sign, requires the person to not have HIV, AIDS, hepatitis, and a few other blood borne pathogens. Failing to disclose this type of information puts the artist at unneccesary risk, and can have serious criminal/civil reprecussions for the person recieving the tattoo. Regardless of the precautions taken by the artist, its only possible to minimize the risks involved...not negate them. Remember that a tattoo artist is knowledgeable about these things, but is not a health care professional.

It should be fine. It will be up to the individual artist, but I'm sure it won't be hard to find one. She absolutely must disclose her status to the artist (in case of an accidental needle stick) Most artists will be professional and discrete.

I've pierced quite a few people who have hep C, and it's not a problem as long as I know before hand.

She should consult her doctor before as well, as should all people who have compromised immune systems, as their risk for infection is greater.

From what I hear, the sanitary and blood-borne pathogens protocols should treat everyone as though they are HIV positive, but your friend still has an obligation to let the artist know, so extra care can be taken.

As a health professional,I would say that she is morally obliged to let the operator know her status, and allow the them to take extra precautions while serving her. I am not sure if they have the right to decline rendering their services solely because of her health status.

I dont know if she can or not. She would be putting the artist at risk even though they use gloves. She'd have to tell them. Research online or talk to artists in your area.

i don't think so because you tend to bleed when you get a tattoo!!! but if she insists on getting one , make sure you tell the person that's doing it in case anything happens!!!!
