We have been taking our dog on walks with a group of other dog owners. When we started he was great, had a good time. He still enjoys it but he has started getting much more aggressive. Not towards the dogs in our group but any other dog at the park. He barks and growls and jumps and stops listening to anything we say when he can see another dog. It's getting worse and worse. Last time, we just had to leave early because he was being so obnoxious. What is causing this? How can we stop it?

Great answers so far! Thanks!
He is neutered by the way.
And not too smart.

It sounds like he's trying to protect his "pack", like he wants the other dogs at the park, to know that he is the alpha male, and this is his pack. Territorial to a degree. Yeah, bad behaviour that needs stopped. You have to make sure that he knows YOU are the alpha male, and YOU are taking care of the pack. Not listening and pulling is not acceptable, in dog park world. The moment you see him begin his tyrate, correct his behaviour, making him stop and sit. He can't jump if he is sitting. Tell him the behaviour expected, then continue your walk, continuing the excercise over and over, letting him know all along, that you are his owner, gameover. Some dogs become over stimulated by all the activity that is going on, between other dogs and the owners, needing correction that is stern, but positive. The main thing is, watching his behaviour. His tail will tell you volumes by watching where it is wagging, or is it tucked between his legs, or straight in the air, with just a little wag at the very tip. Not a good sign when you see that, he's alert and not likin' what he senses. Keep going to the park, socialization is key to his happiness and yours. One more thing, any new dogs in your group? He might be feeling competitive with a new member. Good luck.

He seems to have taken on the roll of lord and protector towards yourselves and the other dogs. If you feel that a more uptempo-ed disciplined voice doesn't work then maybe you should take him for a short spell to the local training school, that will sought him out. But before you do talk to the trainer before hand via phone and explain the problem. Maybe for your piece of mind you would be better and wiser to invest in a muzzle, just for a short time until the problem is resolved.

Check out/watch the Dog Whisperer. There was a program on today just like the problem you describe. You have to divert their attention. Tug (not jerk) on their leash and continue or push your leg against the dog when it starts this behavior..something to change it's focus. .JUST tune in to this program occasionally and he gives you great ideas. Good Luck

I'm not exactly a vet but I'm guessing that sence he's a male he would naturally be agressive to other dogs. He wants a mate this season and is activally looking for one. There is nothing you can really do except tell him no. dogs are also very territoral so that might be it also. Get him a spayed female dog is my advice.

territorial,, because you go to the park with your own pack so often ,, he could be viewing this as HIS place.... hopefully you have him neutered,, and try varying your places that you walk him too

Bring along a small spray bottle or toy water gun filled with water. Douse him as needed.
