I have several uncles and cousins who used to stutter. All of them read and worked through the steps in "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" published by The Stuttering Foundation. One also went to a speech therapist who specialized in treating stuttering. A referral list is on the Stuttering Foundation's web site at www.stutteringhelp.org. You will also find brochures that you can download or read online that are helpful to give to relatives, friends, teachers, employers, etc. Most people don't understand stuttering and don't know how to react to someone who stutters. Our family learned what to do to help those who stutter, such as slowing our own rate of speech and slowing the pace at home. All of my relatives had very normal lives with rare occurances of stuttering as they got older. Ladies who are worth having as friends and spouses will treat someone who stutters with the same respect they would anyone else. Practice and determination with help from a speech therapist or following the steps in a self therapy book will gain you fluency but will not "cure" stuttering. There still may be times of stress that the stuttering will return.
