It depends on what he's growling about. Dogs have three growls: the light play growl that sounds from the mouth; a more serious throat growl as a warning (keep away from my dinner); and the deep chested 'I'm gonna-bite-you' threat. If you hear that one, you're in trouble if he's aiming at you.

So, what's causing the old boy to growl? Is he in pain and warning you not to touch him? A trip to your vet may be the answer.

It would depend on what the circumstances are and what he is growling about or at. Is he in good health? You might want to have the vet check him out and explain the circumstances to him/her. If the dog has some type of perception problem (sight loss, hearing issues) he could be confused or scared. He could be in pain. Are there people or other animals that are making him feel threatened? You need to find out the cause to find the answer.

Get a dog behaviorist. Humane Society because the dog growls at you? Giving him up for that?!! Side Note: I'm reporting all answers from Schooltimeisfun.

Is there a reason for the growling? If there is, then stop that. But if he's old and just mean and growling for no reason, don't put up with it. You need to be the dominant one, otherwise the rest of his life he will be growling more and more at you because he thinks he's the boss.

Take him to the vet. There may be a reason that he is doing this. He is probably in pain and does not want anyone near him. Hope this helps!!

Under what circumstances is he growling? Like, is he warning that he is about to bite you?

make him as comfortable as possible and leave him alone.

he is old, probably has arthritis, probably does not feel good much anymore

and does not want anyone around bothering him. he is more than likely just warning you he is not wanting physical contact.

Show him who is boss! My dog does this. We just ignore it and tell him NO and show him that we are the boss.
