In Australia the good old handshake is going strong, and I do it to men, and women if they offer their hand as well. My question though, is it ok to offer your hand/shake hands with a girl when you're introducing yourself, or should I stick with "Hello, I'm Josh, nice to meet you", without the handshake?

You can tell a lot from a simple hand shake. Stick you hand/neck out there and say hello. We'd say "Howdy" where I can from followed with a firm shake.

From the etiquette that I was taught (many years ago) and in all the books I've read, it's proper to give a handshake only if the woman offers her hand first. Rules are much more lax today than before but I know I don't like instant familiarity. I've talked to a lot of girls/women who definitely don't like a guy meeting them for the first time and hugging or embracing them in some form or other. A nice introduction with a great smile while looking her in the eyes is a great way to begin.

I think it is a good thing that you are the kind of a person that offers hand shakes, but some women may be uncomfortable. so i personally do not suggest you to do it.

i have asked myself the same question often and this is my answer. no you shouldn,t shake hands. if you have been doing it right with men then your handshake will be firm by instinct. and that not good. i girls hand is so much smaller and softer and weaker than yours. to me it feels very akward. apon instinct i have crushed girls hands before.

I dont know about Australian culture but I don't think either or will make or break that relationship. I assume you are referring to women that you like. I always like to smile and extend my hand and close it with the other.
