Yes, for many reasons.
#1, the losses the Japanese suffered with 2 nuclear attacks was far less than the losses they would have suffered had Allies needed to attack the mainland of Japan.
#2, is resulted in far fewer causualties to the Allied side. That's always a big plus when you can win a war and not lose a lot of your own people.
#3, it showed the true destructive nature of nuclear weapons. Had they NOT been used on Japan, when the US was the only nation with nuclear weapons, they would have been used elsewhere at a later time when there was more than one side with them. An attack by one side would lead to a retaliatory attack by the other side, most likely more punishing than the initial attack, which would result in yet another attack to get payback, etc, etc.

when I first heard about the atomic bombs when I was little I said they should not have. But when I learned all the details and understood what happened..... I don't know what to pick.
But for now I say the should have.
1) the other options the americans had would all result in death...even more than the bombs.
2) the Japanese were crazy (I mean for the war) They would give up their lives no matter what.
and you get the idea.....there are more reasons.

Yes the bombs should have been dropped the Japanese wou;d have faught to the death and the war would have continued to around 1947. The sultra secret US invasion of Japan OPERATION OLYMPIC would have involved about 1 million US troops and imgine how many lives on both sides would have been lost. Also if the US had the bombs abd did't use them to end the most costly war in the history of the world and allowed it to drag on President TRuman I think would have been impeached.

I would say yes. Even after seeing film footage of the "survivors" of Hiroshima, which was disturbing, if the US had to totally invade Japan with military forces, the deaths of both sides would have been in the millions combines. It is hard to accept that the deaths of hundred-thousands is a better option, but the fact is that the US government, when it still intended to invade Japan, had to order so many purple hearts to prepare for it that we were still using those ordered then in the 1970s, and some sources say we are still giving out those ordered for the casualties of a Japan invasion.

During WWII, when the Top Brass was considering a full fledged invasion of Japan, the President was informed that it would cost over one MILLION american lives to end it. America was not about to let that happen, so, even before this occured, the Manhattan Project was taking place.

Absolutely yes: I lived the era and statistically is was determined since the Japanese had no intention of surrendering and like the terrorist of today believed to die for the Emperor of Japan was to live in an afterlife in glory, it would have taken the lives of 1/4 million young men to invade their country with over a million more casualtys, many young people don't realize this and it was a question of either them or us.

I wasn't alive at the time, but yes from what I understand and have read, we did the right thing even though dropping the 2 "big ones" was inhumane. Experts estimate that the war in the Pacific would have gone on for another 2 or 3 years if we did not. Apparently Japanese citizens were arming themselves against an Allied invasion, in other words they were not going down without a long drawn out fight.
