if you dont know the answer to this, you still need to do a lot more research before installing linux on your machine, but yes, it will reformat your hardrive, erasing all of its content.
DO YOUR HW before making any move into the wonderful world of linux!

I have a dual-boot system so I didn't have to erase anything and I could access my Windows files from Linux. Maybe if you have 10GB of extra space you can dual-boot instead of getting rid of your old operating system. But if you want to get rid of your files, then I suggest you do it before installing Linux, that is if you want to completely get rid of your old OS.

Hmm, I think you could split your HDD and install Linux on the split HDD you just made.
Although by doing that i'm pretty sure you'd have to run your current OS, and then run linux from that.
Sorry, I'm still on a windows OS. And never really bothered with Linux

No, you can resize your existing partition to make room for other partitions for linux to use. I don't know if any linux installers do this automatically, but the knoppix livecd comes with a program that can do it (qtparted)

you dont have to erace all files.. select a drive where you wanna install it.. it wil fomat that drive to exe2 or exe3.. and wil start installing..
