Richard Long does not do paintings. His art is conceptual, time-based work that he documents with photographs and writing. He walks, often long distances, and usually marks his path with rocks or other objects as visual markers or records of his visit to that site. He explores the interrelation of time, space, and distance through the act of walking. So his work includes both acts that happens during particular times (walks which take significant amounts of time), and the documentation of those acts, such as a photographs. The objects and other changes he leaves in the landscape record both his passage through the space and though time.
