Is it possible to join the U.S. marine corps if I currently live in Canada? Do I have to first apply for U.S. citizenship before driving down to a recruiter?

Please post answers, not this anti-war ********... And also, how well do you have to swim to pass boot camp? I am in very good physical health but not a good swimmer. I can swim underneath water but not above it...

Wannabe ... Yes and no. Non-U.S. citizens may join the U.S. military, but you must have already been a legal resident of the U.S. or its territories.
I don't know whether this link (below) will work properly, but in case it doesn't, here's the essential part of the answer you need from the DefenseLink.Mil web site:

"Enlistment into any branch of the U.S. military, by citizens of countries other than the United States is limited to those foreign nationals who are legally residing in the United States and possess a Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services Alien Registration Card (INS Form I-151/551 - commonly known as a "Green Card"). Applicants must be between 17 and 35; meet the mental, moral, and physical standards for enlistment; and must speak, read and write English fluently.
"The U.S. military branches cannot assist foreign nationals in obtaining admittance into the United States. Questions concerning immigration to the United States should be asked of the U.S. Embassy. Only after immigration procedures are completed and an applicant is legally residing in the United States may an application for enlistment be accepted."

Thanks for thinking about us and good luck to you.

I was in the army with some soldiers with mexican citizenship but not american so I know you can join the american forces without being an american citizen. Figure out which is the nearest american city you can travel to with a recruiting office you'll have to go eventually to take the entrance tests. Give them a call and they'll be able to answer any question you could possibley have. As far as swimming difficultys they'll teach you what you need to learn just like you probley cant run like a marine or shoot like a marine or swim like one now. training is the drill instructors business and business is good. Good luck.

Yes it is possible to be a Canadian resident and be a Marine. You don't have to be a citizen to join the military. I knew a recruiter from Canada and knew of one from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
In regards to swim qual... for Class 4 you must swim 50 yds/m, jump off a 10' platform, tread water for 4 minutes, ad swim the length of the pool (50 yds/m). Then you'll do more from there.
Try to find a number of an RSS in the closest biggest city and state next to your hometown. Yelloebook.com should help.

yes,its possible to join if you are a Canadian resident. The recruiter should be able to tell you all the info. A woman my daughter knows is a Canadian resident and she is in our Army. She received some kind of waiver. Hope that helps.

You know, our Marines and Soldiers are trying to avoid performing any duties in Iraq from shooting themselves in the foot to going AWOL because they understand this war is unjust. Now if you wish to ignore all the signs like 30,000 injured more than 10,000 dead and 60,000 kicked out of treatment from mental illness, desert sickness and loosing body parts at Water Reeds Hospital then I say:
Become a citizen by contact Bush and let him know you're willing to be a s.ucker... I mean, be a solider for his war and I think he'll fastback your citizenship application and you'll be in Iraq less than 48 hours.
Good luck solider!
