10 in any legit martial arts. Bujinkan doesn't have the extra 5 like people think, just 5 levels of seniority for 10th dan people.

One can know as many friggin katas, stances, poomses, routines, techniques, variations, applications, tactics, strategies, theories, and dirty tricks as their myriad mnemonic mechanisms can facilitate and the laws of physics will let slide.

Fighting is very complex and is not lacking in depth so many people that teach martial arts will try to learn as much as they can in order to have a broad sampling of material to teach. This has also happened with sport MMA fighters because they must receive specialized training in many disciplines to defeat the many different types of fighters that the minimal-rules competition has brought out.

In Most arts 5th degree, 5 stripes added onto a black belt, is a master. Master is a pretty high level, its been equated to having a masters degree from a university.

That's not the highest ranking though. In most styles being a grandmaster is the highest rank one can obtain as a black belt.

In some styles that's 10 stripes or 10 Dan ranks added onto your black belt.

In Taekwondo however, there is no 10th Dan, itk and wtf rankings only go to 9th Dan. A 9th Dan though does carry the title "grandmaster".

So it varies from style to style, but their is no questioning that the grandmasters are the professors of their art. They have the highest rank one can obtain in any martial art.

I think most organized martial arts have 5 degrees of black, however I've heard some even have 10. However, if you are just attempting to get as many degrees of black in as many martial arts as possible, you should rethink your intentions. Yes, everyone has their own motivation to study martial arts and I'm not saying that you should stick to only one art form, but it is still art. The most important person to prove your art to is yourself. Good luck in your studies!

It depends on the style. In Tae Kwon Do the highest is 9th degree. I don't think there is a limit on how many different arts a person can learn.

I define knowing an art as 100% mastery. To truly "know" one complete martial art system can take a lifetime of study.
Belts and rank mean nothing, they are just a tool for organization. Outside of a school rank is not a universal thing. It is all relative.

In my Tae Kwon Do, the highest is a tenth Dan black belt. My Master is a ninth and that had taken his his entire life. He is really good.
You can learn as many martail arts as you like, but I doubt you would go very far in them. ;D
Hoped that helped.

9th degree in Okinawan and Japanese arts with the exception of judo. i believe judo you can obtain 10th. As far as the other part of your question. You work a lifetime to attain your 9th degree so you would only know one system.....but....you would know all you could possibly know in that art.

If you create your own art then you could have a 10th, Soke (head of family or Soke') however, this would also take a lifetime to perfect.

hope this answers your question.

Typically, 10th degree denotes that you have mastered one system. It can also imply that you are the originator of a new art, having taken the mastery of that one style and perfected it.

it's different in every form...i only know how many degrees in tae kwon do, that's nine and there are only three living ones...you must be elected by a panel of high rankings in order to promote to ninth.
