it may be that she has arthritis or her sight has gotten too bad to see the steps clearly. If she has cataracts (her eyes will shine blue) her vision may be too limited. My dog is 13 years old. Due to arthritis, some days she walks slowly. I imagine the day will come when she can't walk at all. Thank god we live in a house that has no steps.

Many older dogs have hip problems, some just are getting sick, other are just not the puppy they use to be. make an appointment at your animal hospital to get her/him checked out it maybe hard to face but it may be time for your dog to rest, she/he is fourteen years old so there many thing that could be going wrong, so just make sure she/he sees a vet okay? Because you probably don't want to see your dog in pain.

It is most likely that your dog is just having an effect of old age. He has probably developed arthritis.

She may be suffering from hip displacia. The vet may be able to give you some good meds. Rimadil(sp?) has worked some miracles in older dogs I used to housesit.

1. arthritis, she just might be in too much pain and really can't use her muscles to go down them.
2. poor eyesight, she might not see the stairs or it may look deeper than it is.

have you checked on either of these with your vet?

Many older dogs have hip problems. She may be unsure of her footing at this point, or it may be painful for her.
