I have had some experience with this quandary since my son was 3 years old and we still hadn't named him! Don't feel rushed - I'm sure there is a deadline but I don't know what it is - my son was named 'baby boy _' during that time and it was fine.
What does your husband say? What are the names of some men in his family and in your family - any heroic types, nice guys, or even just names you like in your family?
My neighbor pondered the question and finally came up with a name for my son and she thought it was perfect - Trevor! Didn't work for me!
Look at a list of current popular names: Dylan is probably in the top 50 or 100, maybe even higher on the list. What this means is that in a classroom, there are likely to be other Dylans. And Joshs. And Zaks. Also Jakes. You can almost tell what age group someone is in by the name their parents gave them.
I like Giancarlo myself and I thought Giancarlo Esposito had to be the neatest romantic actor - then I saw him in a movie and he is black and played a gangsta type.
I still like that name, though!
Also, keep saying names with your last name. Put your last name with the name, middle name and initials and see if there is anything funny about the way it sounds - because kids will make fun of anything that can be made fun of.
Do a google of the name you come up with and see if there are any criminals out there that you may not be familiar with that have the same first name.
I know two couples who thought they had the perfect made-up names for their daughters, guaranteed unique! One turned out to be such a common name that I have already heard it or read it hundreds of times. The other turned out to be the name of a car.
Make sure it is something you can shorten easily if it does turn out to be a bad choice for some reason 10 years from now.
