I have been on the methaone program for two years. I take 75mls daily at the pharmacy. One of the side effects of methadone is sweating and I sweat badly from it, it is embarressing. I know that methadone has helped me stay off of heroin and morphine. I have been clean from all opiates for two years as of March 16th. The thing is that I am sick of sweating. My 7 year old understands that the reason we have to go to safeway everyday is so mommy can get her medication and that medication is what helped mommy get better and made mommy be able to be his mommy again. I promised him that I would not stop until he was comfortable with it as about 6 months ago the sweating was bad and I was going to stop but he was frightened that I would be "sick" and leave him again. So I stayed on it at the same level and told him I would not stop without discussing it with him. We discussed it the other day and we want to know how I would feel if I stopped. Does anyone have a suggestion??

Well, actually you are not "clean" because you are on the methadone. I know it's prescribed, but methadone treatment is not supposed to be going on for years. You should get off of it, but you need to talk to your doctor first. No, I would not stop it cold turkey. God, you'll be so sick and when you are that sick, you may go out and get an illegal substance to make the sickness go away. You know this.
Also, I hope you are going to NA or AA. You really need to talk to your sponsor, too.

Methadone treatment should not be stopped cold turkey. If you feel you are ready for the next step, go to your doctor and talk about a step down therapy.
