Are you joking ? A Golden Retriever is one of the most gentle dogs going. lol. Lets look at the facts, A golden Retriever is one of the most gentle dogs, they are used a lot for blind people to lead them around etc. They have a very gentle mouth that will old but never peirce the skin because they are retrievers bred for the rich to pick up game and not bruise it. As for attacking I have never ever heard that in all my life, I think it was the westy that attacked the retriever and lost, Westies are notorious for biting people and posties and attacking bigger dogs. Actually I think the westie should be put on the dangerous dogs list. Just looked through the answers and think you have been shot down, put the westie to sleep

A dog should not be classified by its breed.
You should take into consideration that dogs attact if they feel scared or harrased, even the most placid dog will attack if they are in a position that they feel scared or Harrased.

Only dogs that attack for no reason should be considerd dangerous. Also a dog that has been trained to attack should be monitored. Your dog Probably attacked the westie because it was either a danger to them or there was another dog in heat close by.

The dangerous dogs act is a load of rubbish. Have you heard the saying blame the deed not the breed. Any breed of dog can attack another dog or bite someone if it is not properly socialised when young.

I think there is much more of a case for scrapping the dangerous dogs act and having a dangerous owners act! It should be compulsory for all dog owners to attend training classes with their dog up to a minimun level of obedience. That way the dog would also get some socialisation with other dogs at least and with other people as puppy classes also bring in volunteers to handle the puppies to get them used to people.

Putting retrievers on the dangerous dogs act would cause very serious problems for the Guide Dogs Association, as the majority of guide dogs are retrievers because of their excellent good nature and intelligence. You cannot condemn a breed of dog because of the actions of one dog. First try looking at the dogs owners, they normally are the biggest problem with and temperamental animal.

No all dogs will have disagreements and you don't put dogs on the dangerous dogs act and you don't give any information on the attack so how can anybody give a sound answer on the matter and golden Retrievers are not known for being a Aggressive breed

no i don't agree that retrievers should be put on the dangerous list.. all i can think as to why the dog attacked your mam's westie is that the retriever must have been attacked a couple of times previously by another dog similar in size to your westie... this happened with a dog we had years ago.. the dog was really placid but another dog kept on attacking him and one day our dog just retaliated.. so while your dog may never have attacked the retriever another dog may have and that might be the reason the westie was attacked...... retrievers are normally the most placid dogs going , in fact they're recommended as a pet for children when choosing a dog.........

No. If any breed where one of them had ever attacked another dog, or even a human, was placed on the dangerous dogs list, ALL breeds would be on it - including Westies.

Usually retrievers are the most placid dogs going but there is starting to be a recognised problem with some males-its a big problem.Avoid this dog if you see it again & get your mum to carry a jiff squeezie lemon in her pocket-if the dog attack again she should squirt it-its very effective!

Well I floored!! I have never in my 27 years of breeding and owning Golden's have I ever seen one attack any other than a tennis ball.
I don't know what the motive was for this one particular Golden to attack a westie but it must have been pestering it to no end! Sorry about your mum's dog but with out knowing the entire story I will not condemn a Golden.
