I love the pentecostal church but many say that we wear long skirts, long hair, and cant be around men. To my knowledge I have never had heard of this and for that matter our church does not tell us what to wear. Well my question is, is there a difference between pentecostal and new pentecostal?

yes! To put it into laments terms...Old time pentecostal (such as I am) is where they wear skirts to the knee to be modest and not to wear anything that pertains to men, long hair cause it is our glory, no make up cause of its vanity. We read and follow the bible.

The history of 20th Century Pentecostalism (in the Western Hemisphere) began with Charles Parham's Bible school in Topeka, Kansas. From there, it spread rapidly across the country, most notably at the Azusa Street Mission in Los Angeles which was overseen by William Seymour.

The early Pentecostals were essentially unified with respect to the holiness message which entailed separation from worldly fashion and amusements. Practically all Pentecostal churches preached against cosmetics, women cutting their hair, immodest apparel, excessive jewelry or all jewelry, dances, theaters and organized sports.

Pentecostals, for the most part, continued to hold this line until the advent of television. Many Pentecostals deemed the acceptance of television to be indistinct from attending the theater and, consequently, preached against it. Many more Pentecostals, however, accepted television and eventually accepted the theater, too. The "television" Pentecostals rapidly began to abandon the old holiness standards and eventually "looked" no different than the "world." However, most of the churches which prohibited television vigorously resisted any compromise from the holiness position.

Today, the overwhelming majortiy of Pentecostal churches have completely abandoned the standards of their forefathers (meaning, of course, the dress code and separation from television & the theater), but there are still many "classical" Pentecostals who remain practically unchanged in their preaching against worldliness.

I hope this answers your question and if you'd like to discuss it further, please feel free to email.

The Pentecostal movement within Evangelical Christianity places special emphasis on the direct personal experience of God through the baptism of the Holy Spirit, as shown in the Biblical account of the Day of Pentecost. Pentecostalism is similar to the Charismatic movement, but developed earlier and separated from the mainstream church. Charismatic Christians, at least in the early days of the movement, tended to remain in their respective denominations.
