So my whole life ive spent every day at nearby ponds fishing banks because i never had a boat, and now im in college and have a boat, not much of a boat, but a boat. and when i take it to a real lake i can catch bass extremely well in the very shallows and along the banks, but when it comes to going any deeper im lost. any tips are appreciated: where to fish, how to fish it, how to know where the fish will be in deeper water, how to know when to go deeper, etc.

Get yourself some electronics (depth finder) and a map. In the spring, bass are shallow and in backs of coves looking to spawn. Later they will move deeper. Fish points, creek channels that come close to the shore (you'll need a map for this), flats that lead to deep water, outside edge of weed line, docks and any windblown parts of the lake.
How deep to go? Bass will be in the shadows, just out of the light so it depends how clear your water is. If your fishing a submerged tree, bass will be just below the light penetration depth. That's how deep to fish.

Good luck.

If you're going to fish deeper water, it's probably worth the investment to get a depth finder. They will pick up schools of fish, but most importantly show you variations on the bottom. Often these changes in elevation on the floor bottom will be where the fish are holding because of change in water temp or to stay in the shadows. With some practice, you will be able to pick up other features such as heavy stump areas. Stay along the shoreline in the spring since fish spawn and the water temp is correct. But in the summer months, the water along the shore line is often to warm and the fish will go to deeper water. Especially during the hottest part of the day.

If you are fishing a very large lake, get one with a GPS option or a GPS so you can save the locations and can go back to your favorite fishing spots time and time again

Paul, you are going to find your best fresh water bass fishing in shallower water where there is lots of structure i.e. trees rocks man made underwater objects etc.. If you are looking at going out a few miles on your boat you can catch Walleye or Steelhead.
