According to the American Dental Assoc. Amalgam fillings are safe. As a dental assistant i would ask for composite if at all pos. Only because they look better and they also wear alittle better. They do not tend to expand and contract like the silver does. They strengthen the tooth from the inside out. Depending on the size of the filling and the surfaces of the filling is going to depend on weather or not you may just want to crown the tooth. In other words if the the tooth has a 3 surface filling you may want to think about a crown. Hope this helps you.

I put composite fillings in molars all the time. If it is a large cavity, it is not recomended because they are not as strong and patients tend have complaints of sensitivity. Resins also do not have a proven track record like amalgams. They will not last forever and after 10 years you will likely need that restoration replaced. But we will place them if our patients request them. As far as amalgams go, the ADA stands by them. The mercury that is in amalgam is ionic. Toxic mercury is methylated.

It depends on how big the filling is going to be if you are able
to have a composite fill. If not large than I don't see a problem.

you will need a filling or a crown. be careful because some dentists sell crowns unecessarily. white fillings last as long or longer than mercury amalgam and you don't have to destroy as much tooth structure putting them in. the source at the very bottom lists what to know about white fillings. i recommend you go to a biologic dentist. amalgam are half mercury:
