The egotistical maniac who christians believe wrote the bible, dose not want his followers to think, that is the whole point of giving them this book, the bible to quote!
Because if they had to think about their beliefs instead of quoting them, they might just figure out that the rubbish they are being fed is just that,Rubbish!

It depends on who you're talking to and whether or not the verse really applies to the situation being discussed. If you can quote a verse as proof that God thinks the way you are talking about, that's great. It's actually His oppinion that counts anyway, not ours. On the other hand, too many people just throw around verses and don't even know what they mean in English, let alone the other languages which they were written in long before this language and sometimes have different literal translations.

They look the same as if quoting any piece of literature. It's obvious whether they have thought about the quote on an intellectual level or if they are quoting it just to look smart.
Some people can quote pieces of their holy book and give a thought-out opinion on what they believe it means. Other people quote from their holy book and then quote from someone else's opinion on what they think it means.
There is a difference and it shows.

I think the ability to mermerize any literature can be beneficial. A person can then accurately relay a message that the author intended to send. Sometimes authors prefer when people quote what they actually said and not the reciters slant. But whether or not people consider this to look "smart" is of little signifigance to me.

no. I find it absolutely hilarious when people on BOTH sides of an argument that doesn't even have anything to do with religion quote the Bible. For example when discussing homosexuality, someone will always quote "Man should not lie down with man". Then someone on the other side will say "judge not lest ye be judged", or "Love your brother". I find these arguments to be hilarious and entertaining because the issue at hand has absolutely NOTHING to do with religion at all. Instead of looking at the issue through the eyes of LOGIC, they look through the slanted eyes of their religion. The whole process of quoting the Bible in an answer is pointless and useless to me...(unless someone is asking specifically about a quote in the Bible)

I generally avoid using bible verses as proof (unless I'm arguing with another Christian.) Partially because for all the weight it has with atheists, agnostics, buddhists, etc. I might as well be reading from Harry Potter. And partially because it is very easy to take a verse out of context and make it mean just about anything you want it to mean.

When I quote the Bible, it's to support a point that I've already made. Quoting the source material to support one's assertion is standard practice in research and is a perfectly valid technique.
If I didn't already understand the material, I obviously couldn't use it to support my own thoughts and ideas.

Pretty much agree wholeheartedly with bikernoj. Quoting the Bible (especially since it usually worthless, as they're quoting it as the "word of God" to people who don't believe that it is the word of "God") seems to be a way of not answering with your own brain. Have to copy someone else's BS.

I think you don't understand. The Bible is not about academics. It's about God's love and sacrifices for you and me and everyone! We quote His Word as they are out of respect and reverance, for God's Word is perfect and not void!
